Week 1-Guadalupe Dominguez- My Reflection
The first reading was a brief introduction to Lifespan Development and its foundations,it is a brief summary to the different topics that we will be learning. The term Lifespan development refers to the changes a person must go through during his\her life time ranging from prenatal stage through older age stage. There are a total of eight developmental stages; the prenatal phase, infancy phase, early childhood phase, middle childhood phase, adolescence phase, early adulthood phase, middle adulthood phase and older age phase. The publication "LifeSmart" suggest that lifespan maturity is the actual outcome of reciprocal action between biological, cognitive and socioemotional factors.
A design of the biopsychosocial model was introduced as a mean to clarify. Biological refers to the genes, diet, and overall health of the person. The psychological aspect deals more with emotions and behaviors. While the social aspect of it tend to focus more on the environment the person is expose too and the support or even lack of support they may have from love ones. In page 13 of the publication it is stated that these areas interrelated with each other in such a way that it can make it hard to distinguish which one played a major role to the development of an individual. The text states "For example, biological forces affect cognitive forces ( skipping breakfast can impact students performance in schools), and it works in the other direction too (positive thinking and strong friendships can impact elderly’s people health.)" (LifeSmart Pp.13)
I really like the examples that were given because they are very recurrent and true to my point of view. When I read the previous stated sentence as fast as a flash my mother's words came back to me. I remember one time having a conversation with my mother about the importance of education and how she always wanted to attend college herself but she did not had the opportunity. My mom said to me "I loved school, I loved to learn, but at times it was very hard for me to concentrate for I was hungry", then after a brief pause she added, "We did not even have enough food, I was constantly hungry and day dreaming about dinner time, how could I learn if I was not feed well." As I was reading about the biopsychosocial model and its different areas I understood how genuine it is. I was able to connect the reading with my mother's experience and able to realize that, yes indeed one area can have a tremendous effect on the other either negative or positive.
I enjoy the example the book gives in pages 5 and 6 about Former President Barack Obama and his development towards success. He is a clear example of a person who came from a humble setting and who used all the resources available to work towards a positive outcome. he clearly made the best choices and made the best of every opportunity he was giving regardless of the hard times he faced.
Taking into consideration the biopsychosocial model, the examples given, and Barack Obama's story I truly believe that the ideas presented are very realistic and have certitude. Lifespan development is a process that starts since we are conceived and last until our very last day. We go through different stages that are influenced by different factors; biological, cognitive and social emotional. Referring back to my moms anecdote, I can say that the factors do interrelate and influence one another. My mother loved school, she was eager to learn but the fact that she was hungry was not helpful. I can say that negative biological forces had a negative impact on my mothers cognitive forces. I believe that if my mother would of had the proper biological forces, she would of had succeed as a student, but it was out of her control.
What I learned through the reading and making connections to my real life will have a positive effect on my future teaching because I will be much more aware of the different causes students may be facing that limit their learning. Students may not be learning due to different factors ranging from biological, cognitive or socioemotional forces.
